The fuller story of why we are gathering, who is behind it, and what we hope will emerge.
What began in 2005 as a small experiment in one small town has grown into an international movement of more than 1,000 local groups and 19 regional and national Transition Hubs across 70 countries. In June 2027, we’re coming together in Portugal to celebrate this journey – and to imagine what comes next.
This gathering is for everyone who shares a vision of a more just, regenerative and resilient future. Whether you are directly connected to the Transition movement or part of another network, organization or initiative working towards a similar future, you are welcome.
It has been more than a decade since the international Transition movement gathered in person. Since then, the world has changed profoundly – and so has the movement. We believe that now, more than ever, we need spaces to step away from our screens, strengthen relationships, share what we’re learning, celebrate what’s possible and find one another across borders and movements. One of the central intentions of this gathering is to deepen relationships and seed new collaborations – within and beyond the movement.
Workshops, Open Space, World Café conversations, regional meetups, creative experiences and celebrations.
Optional opportunities to go deeper and learn together after the festival through 1-2 day workshops.
Focused space for Transition leaders, Hubs and teams to explore the future of the movement together. This is specifically for the internal Transition Network International and Hubs Group. If your team would like to come together for an internal retreat as well before the festival, please let us know.
Shared meals, nature, play, rest, conversation and plenty of unstructured space to meet people and build relationships.
Because some of the most meaningful connections, collaborations and ideas can’t be planned in advance.
After 20 years of Transition, this is an invitation to reconnect, celebrate, build relationships, spark collaborations and imagine together what the world needs from us now. And how we can come into deeper solidarity and explore how we can work better, together.
We recognise that bringing people together from around the world comes with a significant carbon footprint, particularly through travel. We don’t take this lightly. If we are asking people to make the time, money and emissions investment to gather in person, we want to make this gathering genuinely worthwhile – creating lasting relationships, meaningful collaborations, shared learning and momentum that can carry far beyond the week itself.
Salema Eco Camp is also helping us reduce the impact of the gathering. The camp has been Green Key certified since 2022 and is working towards Zero Waste certification. Its approach includes water conservation, wastewater recycling, composting, waste reduction, biodiversity and regeneration projects, and ongoing carbon footprint measurement. At the on-site Nazari restaurant, the carbon footprint of each dish is calculated with an emphasis on local products.
We invite creative carbon-friendly travel when possible. Car-pooling. Trains. Buses. Rideshares. Cycling. We will do our best to create processes to enable this.
This international gathering is also intended as a special moment to mark 20 years of Transition, rather than a model for gathering every year. In the years that follow, we intend to focus our resources more strongly on supporting bio-regional and local gatherings, making it possible to connect, learn and celebrate closer to home while continuing to strengthen the wider international network.
Transition Network International (TNi) is organising the gathering with Transition Hubs from around the world, welcoming collaboration with allied organisations and networks.
